Linux!

Post by emmy on Thu Nov 19, 2009 12:07 pm

so... after, like... 6 years? 7 years? i decided to finally get a linux distro on my pc again... which is cool.

except i didn't remember linux being so difficult last time i installed it... dang, java doesn't support ubuntu, the music player refuses to actually play music, the videoplayer... of course, refuses to play any videos, all asking for extra packages which i have to download, which i can't download because somehow, the idiots have omitted to add a download button, manually installing programs is impossible, the promised web-based wiki is actually nonexistant, and the irc support that was promised somewhere needs an extra package... and guess what?

gah. i clearly remember linux being a lot simpler back then... :'(

ahh welll... i'm downing fedora right now, the version i think i used to use back then, so that should work...

Well, I hope you get it fixed. I hate it when I can't get the right downloads for firefox so something will work.. or when I do get the latest version, and something still doesn't work.

meh, i hate the fact that it's almost incredible to get straightforward instructions to do things in linux. you have to search for hours just to find how to install a program.

Yes, that's a small problem...

Anyway, what are the problems? I might try to explain to you...

hmmmm...

about the music player, have you downloaded the Codecs? Cause linux only comes with Open Source codecs, because of the proprietary licences...

Go to the Synaptics installer and search for GStreamer packages...

yeah, i fixed the codecs issue, well except the wma one of course, and i think the cause i couldn't use packages the intended way was because of my lame internet connection

anyway, i'm trying to get empathy-idle to work, but every time i try to compile the stuff i get error codes. same goes for almost anything else i try to compile from tarballs.

i could post the code here if i reboot in ubuntu again (running windows atm to export FF settings)

hmmmh. you know, the wine filebrowser really sucks. i can't actually use my windows drives when using wine, thus destroying the whole point of wine in the first place.

Don't use wine if you have a windows sistem also installed... It looses it's utility there...

And replace the empathy with the pidgin... Pidgin is better...

Yep, that's right JP.

Oh, and for newbs, I suggest Linux Mint.

It comes with most crap preinstalled so that you don't have to mess with it.

Plus, it has the software center app.

Ok, just get mint.

It's much easier to use.

About the flash player....

Paste this into the terminal, and hit enter:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

Then, type in your password.

Yea, you have flash.

i have flash, it's just the problem that it ain't reacting to mouse controls on some flashies, and on others it does work. just adobe being too lame to actually make sure something works before they put it online, i guess...

ooh look! my network and torrents are actually working faster with linux... Very Happy

and i just fixed my wireless lan adabter all by myself...

Spoiler:
(i just slung it across the room and reassembled it again. JAY for russian fix)

Just adobe being gay.

LOL, yeah.

Hopefully, with the rise of Google's OS, Adobe will finally give into making things better for Linux.

Man, if they seriously jump into the linux world, we're going to see alot of people switching.

Indeed... if Google makes the jump, we shall see many other informatic companies jump into Linux...

Thinking that everything started with Google support to Firefox... Makes me feel like the internet is a wonderfull thing...

Yeah, but I don't think Google's OS is going to be an all out everyday use, do everything on it OS like ubuntu.

I think it will probably just be geared to netbooks mostly.

The whole cloud computing advancement thing is going to be interesting though.

Well, it does have a small down side... if the internet is down, how would you do your work, without the apps? I think Google Chromium OS should have at least a way to work offline with it...

Yeah, I know.

I hope they do something about that.

Well, they already have gears, that's a start.

Heck, I wonder how google wave is going to work out? I really want to see this new email approach.

Yeah, me too...

But I'll always prefer fully functional OSes... They're always ready to do what we want...

YES! This is why I will only run Google OS in a Virtual Box when I try it out.

Sorry google, the full scale distros are too good.

Indeed... nice idea... I actually use some linux in VM, cause somehow dual-booting makes bad to my pc (or to my need to control myself from screweding up the PC's software Razz)...

And I'm a kid, so I need games to play on full speed (which wine sometimes can't do...), that's the only thing why I've 7 on my laptop...
